One of the eleven yellow stars (detail) that illuminate the painting in contrast to the cool blue, fluid, swirling night. It is often interpreted as a religious piece depicting the story from the Book of Genesis where Joseph has a dream of eleven stars, the sun and the moon which appear to be merged together here. Van Gogh painted this piece by heart while he was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France seeking treatment in a mental asylum.
